Alethea Thomas

When we find ourselves in difficult circumstances, most people would benefit from the help of a professional counselor to make sense of, walk through, and grow from life’s challenges. I’ve been helping clients work through trauma, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, and other mental health issues since 2012.

My professional focus in counseling is on improving mental, emotional, social and spiritual health. I approach my practice from a Christian worldview and am willing to discuss how faith can assist in recovery and emotional wellbeing. I encourage clients to at least consider the concept of a Higher Power at work to restore you to sanity as is expressed in 12 Step Programs.

I utilize therapy methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, family systems, and EMDR to address current problems and make sense of your upbringing. My ultimate goal is for clients to embrace their personal responsibility for mental and emotional health and to cultivate healthy practices which lead to a satisfying life. I often have a small Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Audrey) in my office who is a friendly and calming presence.

I believe that there are simple truths that can guide and restore our mental and emotional wellbeing.

Some of these are:

  • Asking for help is a courageous and wise thing to do
  • Happy people are not solely dependent on others for their happiness
  • In order to beat an addiction (of any type) you need teammates–a 12 step program, Celebrate Recovery, or some sort of support person/group
  • God is for you even when it does not feel like it
  • Grief is exhausting but if you commit to seeing it through, you will come out healthier
  • It is not good to be or feel alone too much
  • Loving yourself (with humility) is crucial to learning to participate in healthy relationships
  • Sleep is essential to emotional and physical health
  • There is no changing the past, but we are free to make wise choices in the present which can dramatically improve our future
  • We can change if we are motivated to and learn to make small, steady changes
  • You can overcome difficult memories & trauma; professional counseling can help you make great progress.
